The Panthers kicked off play in the Westwood Invitational tournament on Monday, February 27th by facing the Ben Lippen Falcons. The Panthers came up on the short end after five innings losing 6-1. Ben Lippen scored two runs in the second on the strength of three hits and two sacrifices. They added two more in the third on two hits and two Panther errors. They scored their last two runs in the fourth on a single and two doubles.
The Panthers clawed for their lone run in the top of the fifth inning. Cal Hucks led off with a single; advanced to second on a single by Matthew Derrick; and to third, when Caleb Green drew a walk. Cal then scored on an infield hit by McKinley Proctor. Three straight strikeouts ended the Panthers threat and the game.
Will Lawyer (0-1) started the game on the mound for the Panthers. He pitched four innings allowing six runs, five of which were earned. He gave up eight walks and did not walk a batter. He struck out one Falcon hitter. Cal Hucks pitched the final inning for the Panthers. He allowed one hit and no runs.
The Panthers are now 0-1 on the year.
