Panther Varsity Baseball Bests Low Country Wildcats

On Monday night, the Panthers varsity squad beat the game Low Country Wildcats 7-3.  Alex Blevins started the game on the mound and gave up three runs, all earned, in four and two thirds innings.  He struck out four; walked four batters and gave up three hits.  Alex Goodwin finished the game on the mound, going two and one third innings, earning the win.  He gave up no hits, struck out two and walked two.  Blevins and Wildcat starter (Rauch) kept the game scoreless for the first three innings.  In the top of the fourth inning, the Panthers scratched out a run when Logan Dickinson scored on an rbi double by Joseph Sightler.  In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Wildcats struck back taking the lead by scoring three runs.  They loaded the bases on two singles and a walk.  The next batter hit a comebacker to Alex on the mound who threw to home for the first out of the inning.  The Panther catcher threw down to first in an effort to complete a double play but the throw sailed past Joseph at first and went into deep right field and out of play allowing two runs to score.  The third Wildcat run scored on a single by their third baseman.  Fortunately for the Panthers, the Wildcats had scored their last run.  The Panthers answered by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth.  Joseph Sightler hit a single and advanced to second on a passed ball.  Panther shortstop, Danny Morales, then hit a single scoring Joseph.  Danny took second and third on the throw home when it eluded the Wildcat catcher.  Jonathan Liva then used an unorthodox sacrifice bunt to score Danny from third.  The bunt was unusual because of its placement.  When he turned to bunt, the defense reacted.  The first baseman and pitcher rushed in to field the bunt and the second baseman ran to cover first base.  Jonathan’s bunt was a little pop fly that landed behind the pitcher’s mound, landing in a position where either the pitcher or second baseman could have caught the ball if they had not been breaking to cover the bunt.  Jonathan scored later in the inning on a passed ball.  The Panthers added three more runs in the top of the seventh.  After Sean West grounded out, Logan Dickinson reached first on an error by the Wildcat shortstop.  On perfect hit and run execution, Logan started for second and Alex Blevins pushed a slow roller through the hole that opened up when the second baseman went to cover the steal.  After Joseph walked to load the bases, Danny Morales hit a single scoring one run.  After a strike out, Alex Blevins scored when Jonathan Liva drew a bases loaded walk.  The next batter, Jake Brunson, was hit by a pitch driving in the last run of the game.  In the bottom of the seventh, the Wildcats threatened but a 6-4-3 (Morales to Blevins to Sightler) double play essentially sealed the victory for the Panthers who are now 11-12 on the season.
