Panther Baseball Splits with Low Country Wildcats

Panthers – 7                       Low Country Wildcats – 2

The Panthers travelled to Summerville on Saturday to face the Charleston Low Country Wildcats in a double header.  It was a beautiful day for baseball as the Panthers won game #1 by a 7-2 score.    The Panthers scored three runs in the top of the first to get the game off to a great start.  Micah West drew a walk with two outs in the inning.  David Hucks then doubled to deep left center field to score Micah all the way from first.  Connor Shealy then doubled to score David and Connor scored when Samuel Leslie singled to center field.  The Wildcats answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame when they took advantage of a walk and two Panther errors.

The Panthers got those runs back in the top of the second.  Drew McKay singled to begin the inning.  He advanced to third on a single by Avery Blevins, who promptly stole second base.  David singled with one out to score both.

Good pitching by Connor Shealy kept the Wildcats at bay and the Panthers added insurance runs in the top of the fifth.  Alex McKay singled and stole second base and advanced to third on a Low Country error.  Drew walked and courtesy runner, Jonathan Sarazen stole second base.  Avery knocked his third hit of the game to score both runs.  David Hucks closed out the game on the mound for PAC.

As stated earlier, Avery had three hits and two RBI’s.  David Hucks had a double and a single and three RBI’s.  Drew McKay had two singles.  Others with hits include Connor (double), Samuel and Alex.

Connor Shealy (1-0) picked up his first pitching victory on the year.  He pitched four innings allowing two unearned runs.  He only gave up two hits and struck out six Wildcat hitters.  David pitched the final inning and did not allow a run.  He allowed one hit and walked two.

Game Notes:  Samuel Leslie and Drew McKay got their first hits at the varsity level.  The Panthers improve to 4-0 on the season.  The Panthers had ten hits and fifteen productive at bats.  The Panthers had four assists and committed three errors.

Panthers – 6                       Low Country Wildcats – 7

In an exciting conclusion to the Saturday double header, the Wildcats prevailed over the Panthers for the first time at the varsity level by a 7-6 score.  The Panthers outhit the Wildcats by a 10-5 margin but could not overcome six errors in the field which led to seven unearned runs. The Panthers had been playing good defense before this game, so hopefully we got all of those errors out of our system in that one game.

The Panthers drew first blood in the top of the first.  Avery Blevins singled and stole second base.  He advanced to third on a passed ball.  He scored on a single by McKinley Proctor.  McKinley stole second base and attempted to score on a single by Micah West but was thrown out at the plate on a very close play.  Micah West advanced to second when David Hucks drew a walk.  Micah then stole third and scored when Connor Shealy hit into a fielder’s choice.  Just like in the first game, the Wildcats scored two runs in the bottom of the first to get right back into the game.  The Wildcats scored their runs on the strength of three hits but a Panther error prolonged the inning allowing the runs to score.  Avery Blevins fielded a ground ball up the middle, stepping on second on throwing on to first to complete a double play preventing the inning the Wildcats from scoring even more runs.

The Panthers scored four runs in the top of the second.  Micaiah Hinkle worked a walk to open the frame.  Drew McKay walked with one out to put runners at first and second.  Avery doubled to left field to score Micaiah and leaving runners on second and third.  McKinley Proctor singled to score both Drew and Avery and scored when Micah West singled giving the Panthers three straight hits.

The Wildcats were silent in the second inning but began their climb back into the game by plating two runs in the bottom of the third.  The Panthers had three errors in the inning.  The Wildcats then took the lead in the bottom of the fourth when they plated another three runs on the strength of two more Panther errors and one hit. UGHHHH.

The Panthers tried to tie the game in the top of the fifth , getting a runner as far as third, but they could punch the run across so the game ended in the first regular season loss.

Samuel Leslie was the starting pitcher for PAC.  He pitched three innings allowing four unearned runs on four hits.  He walked one batter.  David Hucks took the loss to even his record at 1-1.  He allowed one hit and three unearned runs.

Game Notes:  The Panthers out hit the Wildcats 10-5 but could not overcome six errors.  Avery singled and doubled and scored two runs.  McKinley Proctor also had two hits, scored one run and had two RBI’s.  Micah West had two singles and scored on run.  David Hucks, Connor Shealy and Micaiah Hinkle all contributed one single and Drew McKay knocked a double.  The Panthers had fourteen productive at bats which is above their per game goal of eleven and generally leads to a victory, but again, they were undone by their errors.  Caleb Green and Dan Beam missed the game due to the SAT.
