The Panthers fell to 1-3 on the season losing to the Hammond Skyhawks on Wednesday night. The Skyhawks scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first when Reece Holbrook singled, stole second and third base and scored on a throwing error by the Panther catcher. They added a second run in the bottom of the second when Ford Pugh walked and later scored on a single by Graham Wilson.
The Panthers dented the scoreboard in the top of the third inning. Parker Pocock singled, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a single by James Reed. The Panthers did not stay within one run long as Hammond plated two more in the bottom of the frame without the benefit of a hit.
The Panthers added a single run in the fourth when John Edens doubled and scored on an Avery Blevins single (this was Avery’s first hit and RBI at the varsity level). Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fifth when Hammond added two more runs on three hits. The panthers scored their last run in the top of the sixth when Matthew Derrick singled and scored when Avery Blevins grounded out into a fielder’s choice. Hammond scored one final run in the bottom of the sixth.
For the game, the Panthers had six hits. John Edens led the way with a single and a double. Others with hits included Parker, James, Matthew and Avery. Avery led the team with two RBI’s.
Matthew Derrick (1-1) was the starting pitcher for PAC taking the loss. He pitched three innings allowing four runs although only one run was earned. He struck out one and allowed two hits. Cal Hucks followed Matthew to the mound. He also pitched three innings allowing four runs, one two of which were earned. He struck out three Skyhawks while allowing six hits. He walked one.
The Panthers try for their second win of the season when they take on the Northside Crusaders Friday night at Bray Park. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00.
