PAC Baseball Cages Lions

On Saturday, April 21st, the PAC baseball teams swept the Augusta Christian Lions by 11-8 in the jv game and 11-5 in the varsity game.  After a shaky start, JC Ellis settled down and pitched a complete game for the Panthers.  He gave up eight runs (six were earned), twelve hits and walked one.  He also struck out four.  The Lions jumped on Ellis and the Panthers early scoring three runs in the top of the first inning.  The lead-off hitter walked and the second batter of the inning laid down a successful bunt which gave the Lions runners on first and second with no outs.  After a groundout to the pitcher, the Lion’s clean-up hitter hit a single scoring the first run of the inning.  The next two batters both hit into fielder choices, each scoring a run.  The Panthers went quietly in the bottom of the first but this team has shown resilience time and time again this year and this game would be no exception.  After the Lions went 1-2-3 in the top of the second, the Panthers managed to claw onto the board.  James Reed led off with a double. He was sacrificed to third by Cole Owens and scored on a rbi single by Pat Brunson.  The Lions jumped back on the board in a big way in the third inning when they plated three more runs when they strung together a single, two doubles and a triple.  The Panthers finally got out of the inning on a groundout to the first baseman, Trevor Dacus, stranding one runner at third.  The Panthers plated three runs of their own in the bottom of the third inning.  The inning started when Anderson Blevins reached on an error by the Lion’s shortstop.  Caleb Wilson walked and Jacob Cain grounded out, moving Anderson and Caleb to third and second respectively.  Clay Dickinson hit a single scoring Anderson and Caleb scored when the left fielder let the ball get by him and go to the fence.  Later in the inning, Cole Owens hit a triple scoring Clay from third.  Both teams went quietly in the fourth inning but the fifth inning is when the Panthers took the lead for good.  After getting the Lions 1-2-3 in the top of the fifth, the Panthers exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the frame.  Jacob Cain led off the inning with a triple.  He scored when Clay Dickinson reached on a error by the Lions shortstop.  James Reed then hit a triple scoring Clay.  Consecutive singles by Cole Owens and Pat Brunson both scored runs and the Lions defense began to reel from the onslaught as two more runs scored due to errors by Augusta Christian fielders.  The Lions scored two runs in the seventh but it was not enough to prevent the Panthers from notching another victory.  The jv team is now 18-5-1.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Panthers prevailed by a score of 11-5.  The Lions roared out of the gate, when their lead-off batter slammed a home run to deep left field.  The Panthers came to bat in the bottom of the inning and scored three runs o a two out rally after the first two batters had popped up.  Logan Dickinson and Joseph Sightler both singled and then Josh Hanna hit a ground rule double to score Logan.  Alex Blevins reached on an error by the Lions second baseman which allowed both Joseph and Josh to score.  After holding the Lions scoreless in top of the second inning, the Panthers plated two more runs in their half of the frame.  Reese reached on single and was sacrificed to second by Matthew Lord.  Thomas Castles hit a double scoring Reese with Thomas taking third on the throw.  Thomas scored when Danny Morales singled.  In the top of the third inning, the Lions scratched back by scoring two runs on a double by their pitcher (DeWitt).  The Panthers got on of those runs back  in the bottom half of the inning when Josh led off with a single and eventually scored on another Reese Hankins single.  Both teams scored single runs in the fourth inning and the Panthers added another in the fifth.  For the Panthers,  Danny Morales scored after hitting a triple in the fourth and, in the fifth, Alex Blevins scored after reaching base via a single.  The Lions scored another run in the top of the sixth inning making the score 8-5 Panthers.  The Panther team put the game away in the bottom of the sixth inning when they scored three additional runs; taking advantage of two errors, one hit batsman and three singles.  Alex Goodwin came on to pitch the final inning and held the Lions at bay after allowing a lead off double. For the game, Danny Morales and Reese Hankins both had three hits.  Danny’s included a triple.  Jonathan Liva chipped in with two singles.  Alex Blevins had three rbis and Reese had two.  The Panther varsity squad is now 13-12 on the season.
