Panthers 22 Augusta Crusaders 7
The Panther Varsity squad won their second straight game and first ever game at Masters Field in Augusta, Georgia against the Crusaders. The Panthers slammed out twelve hits and were aided by seven Crusader errors. Catcher Sean West led the way with three singles and three RBI’s. Josh Hanna, Alex Blevins and Danny Morales all had two hits with Alex and Danny collecting doubles. Danny had two RBI’s and Alex drove in four. Two Crusader errors in the top of the 1st helped the Panthers claw onto the scoreboard twice. The Panthers added six runs in the second aided by a nice sacrifice bunt by Jacob Cain and a beautiful suicide squeeze bunt by Jake Brunson scoring Alex Blevins from third. They added four runs in the 3rd inning and then after a quiet 4th inning, the wheels really fell off in the 5th for the Crusaders. The Panthers sent fifteen men to the plate and scored nine runs. During this rally, Trevor Dacus and Daniel Reed both got their first hits of the year. Jacob Brunson started on the mound for the Panthers and was off to a dominating start when the entire team lost focus when it exploded out to a big lead. He gave up three earned runs before he was lifted in the 3rd inning. James Reed settled the team down and stopped the bleeding going 1 1/3 innings allowing no earned runs. Brian Wilson finished the game on the mound for the Panthers allowing two runs, neither of which were earned.
Panthers (JV) 19 Augusta Crusaders 9
In the second of two wild and wooly games in Augusta this past Saturday, the Panthers did not need the luck of the Irish to pull out a win. In a game that was actually closer than the score indicated (the game was tied after seven innings at 6-6), the Panthers pounded out seventeen hits and scored, and scored again, in their 19-9 victory. Eight Panther players had hits including Parker Pocock and Hughes Butler who both recorded their first hits of the season. Cole Owens collected three hits with two of his hits being doubles. Daniel Williams, JC Ellis, Pat Brunson and Anderson Blevins all contributed two hits with Ellis and Blevins pounding out triples. The hitting star for the night; however, had to be Mr. Cal Hucks. He collected three hits, all of which were inside the park homers. In addition to his twelve total bases, he also collected eight RBI’s during the game. Cal backed up his heroics at the plate by pitching seven innings allowing only three earned runs. He gave up six hits and struck out three. Danny Waller finished the game on the mound allowing three hits and no earned runs. The Panthers still need to tighten up on defense but at least the bats are awakening.
