Panther Middle School Baseball Splits Two

The Panthers middle school baseball team won the first of two games against the Concord Stallions on Saturday afternoon by a score of 6-2.  After a scoreless first, the Panthers plated one run in the top of the second inning.  David Hucks was walked and eventually scored on a groundout by Jackson Gleaton.  The young Panthers added two more in the top of the third.  Back to back to back singles by Matthew Derrick, Danny Waller and William Lawyer produced the two runs with Danny and William collecting RBI’s.  The Panthers added one more run in the fourth inning when Jackson reached first on a fielder’s choice.  He was sacrificed to third by Avery Blevins and scored on a single by Caleb Green.  The Stallions finally crossed home plate in the bottom of the fourth  when they scored on run.  The Panthers got that run back in the sixth inning when Nick Beach scored.  Nick singled and scored when Avery Blevins reached base due to an error.  The Stallions kept fighting and scored another in the bottom of the sixth making the score 5-2.  The Panthers added an insurance run in the seventh when Danny Waller crossed home plate.  He hit a double to start the inning and scored on a single by David Hucks.  The Stallions went one, two, three in the bottom of the seventh ending the game in a victory for the visiting Panthers.  For the game, Caleb Green and Danny Waller both had two hits.  Six different Panthers had RBI’s.  Avery Blevins was busy at second base defensively getting three assists as well as catching a fly ball to end the game.  Micah West pitched three and one third innings allowing one unearned run.  He did not allow a hit but walked seven batters.  He struck out two.  William Lawyer pitched the final three and two thirds innings.  He allowed one run and four hits, while striking out two.  The Panther middle school team evened its record at 2-2 for the season.

The Panthers dropped the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon against the Stallions from Concord.  The Panthers scored first when they plated two runs in the top of the first inning.  Avery Blevins led off with a walk and advanced to third on a double by Matthew Derrick.  Both Avery and Matthew scored when the Stallion center fielder made an error allowing William Lawyer to reach first safely.  The Stallions got those runs right back in the bottom of the first when they tied the game by scoring two runs of their own.  The Panther offense was quiet in the second inning and the Stallions took control of the game when they plated five runs on four hits in their half of the frame.  The Panthers got right back in the game by scoring three runs in the third inning.  Matthew, Danny and William combined to get things going again.  Consecutive singles by those three produced one run and had runners on second and third.  David Hucks singled to drive in Danny Waller and William scored on an error by the Stallions left fielder.  Unfortunately, the Panthers were finished with their scoring.  The Stallions pushed one more run across in the sixth inning to provide the final score of 8-5.  The Panthers threatened in the seventh but left the bases full of Panthers when the Stallions recorded the final two outs on strikeouts.    Matthew Derrick had two hits and stole four bases.  William Lawyer and Micah West both had two hits as well.  David Hucks was the starting pitcher for the Panthers going one and one third innings.  He allowed seven runs (all earned) on seven hits and four walks.  Matthew Derrick finished the game on the mound for the Panthers; pitching four and two thirds innings.  He allowed one unearned run on no hits and one walk.  He struck out four.  The middle school team is now 2-3 on the season.
