Panther JV Baseball Gets By Wilson Hall

In an exciting game at Bray Park, the Panther Junior Varsity baseball squad defeated the Barons from Wilson Hall for the first time.  The Panthers showed tremendous heart battling back several times when it seemed they were on the verge of letting the game slip away from them.  This started in the first inning when the Barons sprinted out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of a single, a double, two walks and two Panther errors.  The Panthers answered right back in the bottom of the frame by plating three runs themselves.  Matthew Derrick led off with a walk and scored when Danny Waller reached base on an error by the Baron third baseman.  William Lawyer doubled putting men at second and third.  With two outs, Tyler Thomason hit an infield single which allowed Danny and William to score with aggressive base running.  Both teams had a scoreless second inning and the Barons took the lead again by plating one run in the third.  The Barons added to their lead in the fourth when they scored five runs with two hits, two free passes and two Panther errors.  The Panthers begin their comeback in the bottom of the fifth by scoring four runs.  Austin “Stump” Coates led off with a walk. Micah West singled putting runners on first and second and then Matthew Derrick was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  With one out, Cal Hucks reached on an error scoring Micah for the first run of the inning.  Danny Waller singled to score Matthew.  Daniel Williams then delivered a clutch two out single to score Cal and Danny.  The fifth inning ended with the Panthers trailing 9-7.  Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth inning setting up the exciting final inning.  The Barons had the first opportunity and made the most of it scoring two runs on a big double by Jacob Cotton with the bases loaded.  The Panthers were able to get out of the inning without further damage in large part due a nice play up the middle by the shortstop, Daniel Williams.  So the Panthers came to bat in the bottom of the seventh inning trailing by four runs.  William Lawyer opening the inning with a walk but he was erased when Daniel Williams hit into a fielder’s choice.  Three consecutive walks by Barons pitching scored the first run of the inning and left the bases full for Micah who singled to drive in the second run of the inning; again leaving the bases loaded.  Matthew struck out looking and the Panthers were down to their last out and were still trailing by two runs.  Cal Hucks came to the plate, hitless for the day.  He promptly laced a single to left field scoring two runs tying the game at 11.  Danny Waller hit an infield single and the bases were full of Panthers once again.  William Lawyer came to the plate and managed to draw a walk from the rattled Baron’s pitcher to score the winning run from third and complete the Panther comeback.  During the game the Panthers trailed by three runs (first inning), six runs (fourth and fifth innings) and four runs (seventh inning) and kept fighting every time.  The Panthers had eleven hits on the day.  William Lawyer had two doubles and one RBI.  Daniel Williams and Tyler Thomason had two singles and two RBI’s.  Micah West and Danny Waller had two singles and one RBI.  Cal Hucks had the one clutch hit and three RBI’s.  Cal Hucks was the starting pitcher for the Panthers lasting four innings.  He allowed nine runs only which three of which were earned.  He gave up five hits, walked five and struck out three.   He was relieved by Daniel Williams who pitched two and two thirds innings.  He allowed two runs (one earned) and one hit.  He struck out five Barons and walked five.  Danny Waller pitched the final one third of an inning facing one batter and inducing the ground out to short.  The Panther JV squad is now 3-1 and face the Cavaliers from Anderson this Saturday (weather permitting).
