Panther JV Baseball Bests Heathwood Hall

Panthers (JV) – 12           Heathwood Hall – 6

The Panther’s JV baseball team evened its record at 3-3 with a 12-6 victory over Heathwood Hall at Bray Park on Monday night. It was a beautiful night for baseball and the Panthers led wire to wire in gaining the victory.

The Highlanders briefly held the lead as they plated one run in the top of the first inning on two hits. Their brief lead would not last through the first inning however.  The Panthers scored three in the bottom of the frame as Heathwood’s pitchers struggled with control early on.  Whit Melnyk and Avery Blevins were walked with one out. After a strikeout and the baserunners stole second and third respectively, the Highlanders first baseman committed an error allowing both runners to score.  Samuel Leslie who reached on the error later scored on a RBI single by Micah West.

The Highlanders closed the gap in the top of the second by plating their second run on a RBI single by their shortstop (Kennard), but the Panthers stretched it back out in their half of the frame by plating two runs. The Panthers scored when Elijah Britton was walked, advanced to third on a single by McKinley Proctor and scored when Avery reached on an error.  McKinley scored on the same play to make the score 5-2 Panthers.

The Highlanders would not go away; however, and continued to fight, scoring two runs in the third on two hits. The Panthers walked two batters and committed one error in the field to help them along.  Again, the Panthers answered the challenge immediately, scoring two runs of their own.  Again, Elijah and McKinley were the catalysts for the scoring.  Elijah reached on a fielder’s choice; stole second; advanced to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a second wild pitch.  McKinley was walked and scored on a single by Whit.

The Highlanders scored single runs in the fourth and sixth innings while the Panthers added two in the fourth and three in the fifth before the game was ended due to time restrictions. Josh Tanner and Caleb Green tripled in the rallies and Samuel Leslie doubled.

The Panthers had ten hits on the day and were led by McKinley (two singles), Caleb (a single and a triple), Samuel (double), Micah (two singles) and Josh (triple). Avery Blevins pitched 2 1/3 innings allowing four runs, two of which were earned. Caleb Green pitched 2/3 of an inning allowing one earned run.  Whit finished the game on the mound for the Panthers allowing one unearned run in two innings.  Panther pitching only allowed six hits on the day.  They also walked six Highlander batters while striking out five.

Game Notes: The Panthers had 20 productive at bats led by McKinley, Caleb, Micah and Alex McKay who all had three.  McKinley scored three runs.  The Panthers had eight assists led by Avery who had three from shortstop and second base.  The Panther JV team is now 3-3.
