Panthers (JV) 9 Augusta Crusaders 6
The Panthers JV baseball team beat the Augusta Crusaders for the second time this season winning 9-6 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Bray Park in West Columbia. Neither team was able to mount much of a threat in the first three innings; however, both teams broke through in the 4th. The Crusaders scored two in their half of the frame on two hits, a walk, a hit batsman and a Panther error. The Panthers responded in the bottom half of the frame by plating four of their own taking a lead they would never relinquish. Anderson Blevins led off the inning with a triple sliding into 3rd just ahead of the throw from left field. He scored when the next batter, Cal Hucks reached on an error. After a fly out, the Crusader second baseman made his second error of the inning allowing JC Ellis to reach base safely and Cal Hucks to score from 3rd. Patrick Brunson and Danny Waller then hit consecutive singles driving in two more runs. The Crusaders did not score in the 5th but the Panthers added to the lead when they had their chance. Anderson led off for the second consecutive inning and reached base safely with a single. He scored on a single by Cal Hucks. After two quick outs, JC Ellis reached first on a walk. Patrick Brunson and Danny Waller went back to back again with singles driving in the final two runs of the inning. After five innings, the Panthers now led by a score of 7-2. The Crusaders charged back in the top of the 6th by scoring four runs, the big blow coming on a two run home run by their catcher, William Wingate. The Panthers got two of the runs back in the bottom of the sixth. Parker Pocock reached via a walk and Anderson doubled him to 3rd. Both runs scored on a single by Cal Hucks to close out the scoring. The Panthers got the Crusaders 1-2-3 in the 7th to close out the game. For the game, Anderson Blevins had a triple, a double and a single. Pat Brunson had a double and two singles. Cal Huck, Danny Waller and Daniel Williams all had two singles. Patrick Brunson was the starting pitcher for the Panthers. After struggling early to find his control, he went five innings giving up two runs, both of which were earned. He allowed four hits and six walks, striking out five. Cole Owens pitched the final two innings for the Panthers. He gave up four runs none of which were earned. He allowed one hit, one walk and had one strikeout. The Junior Panther squad is now 9-5-1 on the year.

In an exciting conclusion to the Junior Varsity – Varsity double header on Saturday, the Panthers won 5-4 in a thrilling game scoring the game winner in the bottom of the 7th inning. The Crusaders dented the scoring column first by plating one run in the 3rd inning on a run scoring single by Ben Wosley. Both teams were silent until the bottom of the 4th when the Panthers managed to get on the board. Jake Brunson led off the inning with a single. With one out, Danny Morales doubled sending Jake to 3rd and Jake scored on a groundout by Sean West. The Crusaders responded by scoring three runs in the top of the 5th inning on two hits and taking advantage of two walks and a Panther error. The Panthers clawed right back in the bottom of the frame by scoring three runs of their own to tie the game. After a quick out, Clay Dickinson and Matthew Lord received free passes to reach base safely. After the second out, Jake Brunson singled to left scoring two runs with Jake taking second on the throw home. Alex Blevins then doubled to deep left scoring Jake from second. Both teams went quietly in the 6th and the Panthers got the Crusaders 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th setting up the late game excitement. In the bottom of the 7th, Josh Hanna reached first safely when the Crusaders first baseman dropped an easy throw for an error. Jake Brunson then bunted him to second and reached first base himself when the Crusader fielders tried to allow the bunt to roll foul but it never did. By the time they picked the ball up, the speedy Brunson was standing on first. Alex Blevins then hit a single in the hole between the shortstop and the 3rd baseman. Josh Hanna was off at the crack of the bat and raced home just ahead of the throw ending the game with a Panthers victory. The Panthers pounded out nine hits led by Jake Brunson who had three hits. Alex Blevins contributed two with a single and double. Danny Morales slammed a double and Jacob Cain and Sean West both hit singles. Matthew Lord chipped in a single and was robbed of an extra base hit on a great running catch by the Crusader left fielder. Josh Hanna was the starting pitcher for the Panthers going 4 2/3 innings. He gave up four runs only two of which were earned. He allowed four hits, six walks and had two strikeouts. Alex Blevins relieved him on the mound finishing the game of the Panthers. He allowed no runs and no runs and walked one. He struck out three. The Panther varsity squad has now won eight of nine games and stands 8-4 on the year.
