Panther Baseball Rebounds in Win Against Northside

Panthers (V) – 12             Northside – 2

The Panthers returned to the victory column cruising to a 12-2 win over Northside Academy on Tuesday night at Bray Park. Starting pitcher Matthew Derrick was dominant as he pitched a four hitter with eight strikeouts.

Even with Matthew throwing a good game from the mound, Northside struck first scoring a run in the top of the first when Davis Motley reached on an error and scored on a Jared Stamey single. The Panthers immediately tied the game in the bottom of the first when Anderson Blevins was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Parker Pocock’s single.

The Panthers took the lead in the bottom of the second by scoring three runs. Cal Hucks led off with a double and scored when Daniel Williams hit the second double of the inning.  Cole Plyer drew a walk putting runners at first and second.  Matthew Derrick hit a grounder to the right side that struck the Panthers runner trying to advance to third (a runner is automatically out if he is hit by a batted ball).  This was the second out of the inning, but the Panthers still had runners at first and second.  Anderson then blasted the third double of the inning, a shot down the left field line which scored both Cole and Matthew making the score 4-1.

Northside fought back in the top of the third by plating their second run of the game. Three consecutive singles scored one run and left runners on first and third with only one out. Jared Stamey, Northside’s catcher, was robbed of his second hit of the game when Anderson made a leaping catch to spear a shot off of Stamey’s bat.  The runner on first was on the move with the pitch and could not get back to first quick enough after the catch and was easily doubled up getting the Panthers out of some trouble.

Northside never seriously threatened for the balance of the game while the Panthers continued to score runs. The Panthers scored five runs in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth to end the game.  The Panthers had six hits in these rallies and were aided by four Northside walks and one error.

Anderson led the Panthers at the plate going three for three with a double and two singles. He scored three runs and had two RBI’s.  Parker Pocock and Daniel Williams both contributed a double and a single.  Both also had three RBI’s.

Game Notes: Matthew Derrick (2-0) was the winning pitcher. He allowed four hits but did not walk a batter.  He struck out eight.  The Panthers had 20 productive at bats led by Anderson with four.  The Panthers are now 6-2 and return to action on Friday at the Anderson Cavaliers.  Game time is 6:00
