Cardinals Nip Panthers on Diamond

Panthers (B-Team) – 7                   Cardinal Newman – 9

The young panther cubs lost a close game to the Cardinals from Cardinal Newman on a cloudy, chilly Thursday night at the famed Polo Grounds off Polo Road in Columbia, South Carolina (our local version of the famed Polo Grounds anyway).  The Panthers struck first for two runs in the top of the first inning.  Avery Blevins led off with an infield single, advanced to third on passed balls and scored on a single by David Hucks.  David later scored when the Cardinal pitcher walked Will Owens with the bases loaded.  The Cardinals took the lead in the bottom of the first inning when they plated three runs on two hits and a walk. After a scoreless second inning, the Panthers tied the game in the top of the third by scoring one run.  David Hucks walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.  The Cardinals retook the lead in the bottom of that frame by crossing home twice on the strength of four hits and a walk.  The Panthers bounced back to tie the game in the top of the fourth inning.  Seann Bryant walked, advanced to second on a ground out and scored on a double by Whit Melnyk.  Whit advanced to third on a single by McKinley Proctor and scored on a wild pitch.  The Panthers held the Cardinals scoreless in the bottom of the fourth so we entered the fifth inning all tied up at five.  The Panthers took their first lead of the game when Will Owens walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.  The Cardinals bounced back by scoring one run of their own on two hits and two walks.  The Panthers avoided further damage when a Cardinal batter lined into a double play when Avery Blevins caught the line drive and threw to Seann who was covering second base.  The Panthers jumped out to another lead by scoring another run in the top of the sixth inning.  Whit walked and scored on a single by David Hucks.  The Panthers surrendered the lead in the bottom of the sixth when three Cardinals soared across the plate.  The Panthers were unable to answer in the top of the seventh so the game ended in a 9-7 loss.  David Hucks led the Panthers at the plate with three singles, driving in two runs.  McKinley Proctor knocked two singles and Whit and Seann both slammed doubles.  Whit and Avery both flashed the leather on defense getting five assists in the field.  Samuel Leslie was the starting pitcher for the Panthers.  He pitched three innings allowing five runs, four of which were earned.  He gave up seven hits and three walks while striking out one.  Jackson Gleaton pitched one inning giving up one earned run on three hits and one walk.  Whit Melnyk finished the game on the mound for PAC, allowing three earned runs.  H only gave up two hits but walked three.  The Panther B-Team is now 1-3.
