The baseball teams formally wrapped up the 2012 season this past Saturday at Saluda Shoals. After a good old fashioned pig picking, the coaches took the floor to discuss this season. Thad Brunson, the JV head coach, discussed this year’s JV team and their final 19-5-1 record. He was pleased with their overall performance and with the progress of some their younger players. This year’s team owned wins against some of the largest private schools in the state such as Hammond, Augusta Christian and Ben Lippen; as well as several public schools, such as North Central and Swansea. Thad also handed out several season ending awards. They were as follows: Offensive MVP – Jacob Cain; Defensive MVP – Anderson Blevins; Most Improved – James Reed; Pitching MVP – Trevor Dacus and the Panther Award went to JC Ellis. The Panther award is probably the baseball team’s most important award because it goes to the player who most exemplifies Christian manly character. For the JV team, this award is voted on by their peers. Congratulations to the whole team on a fine season.
Varsity Head Coach Joel Castles discussed the season (final record of 13-13) and the progress the team had made by moving from five wins in the 2011 season to 13 in the 2012 season (this represented an improvement of 160%). This included wins against Cardinal Newman, Ben Lippen, Heathwood and Augusta Christian. They also finished second in a tournament at Lower Richland; owning wins against 3A Lakewood out of Sumter and 1A Branchville High School. Other public schools that the Varsity team defeated this year include Wagener-Salley and North Central High School. Joel handed out the season ending awards and they were as follows: Offensive MVP – Alex Blevins; Defensive MVP – Josh Hanna; Most Improved – Sean West; Pitching MVP – Logan Dickinson and the Panther Award went to Logan Dickinson as well. Congratulations to the award winners but to the entire team as well for a fine season.
